Ramadan 1443 | 2022

In the past few months, we resumed our in-person gatherings and returned to regular Ramadan Iftar gatherings. We’ve sustained two of our new branches: Youth Program and Stewardship & Sustain

Hundreds of community members have joined us for our events and classes, and we have grown in numbers with familiar and new faces.

Here are the most recent Highlights this Ramadan:

  • Language of Light Series, Iftar, & Taraweeh:
Each Thursday this Ramadan we gathered for reflection on the Quran, iftar, and taraweeh prayer. Community joined us for exploration of key words from the Quran that unlock the worldview of Islam and lead to a deeper following of the Prophetic Way. Taught by Baraka Blue. Iftars were catered each week by local Muslim restaurants including food from a variety of regions with delicious cuisines, including Bosnia, Senegal, and Malaysia.

  • Stewardship & Sustainability Iftar:
Community Kitchen Dinner with Stewardship Alliance and Wasat’s Stewardship and Sustainability Director Rhamis Kent, led us in an exploration of Stewardship in Islam.

  • Neighborly Needs:
We distributed 3,000 meals during our community iftars and through our Neighborly Needs program.

  • Convert Iftar:
This year, in collaboration with our friends at Cafe Turko, we hosted a special iftar program for converts and their families.

  • First Iftar Banquet post-pandemic:
This was an opportunity to celebrate our Wasat community, look back at what we have accomplished in the past year, and share our plans for the future. We were joined by special guest Shaykh Ubadullah Evans as well as our local Wasat teachers and facilitators.

  • Wasat Youth Group Iftar:
Wasat invited community and neighboring youth groups to break bread with our Rites of Passage youth group. Before Iftar, youth engaged in relationship building activities and then joined community for iftar.

  • Inner Knowing Video Series: Published on Youtube and social media, Inner Knowing is a series of short videos exploring the spiritual path. The core of the message conveyed and embodied by the prophets and sages across time and space is that there is a way to polish the heart to awaken one’s true spiritual nature.

Looking Forward to free programs…

all summer long.

Wasat summer programs include:

  • Rumi’s Masnavi June sessions:
June sessions, where we will be delving into Rumi’s understanding of diversity of religious belief. This program will continue in September with, along with other fall programmings.

As we continue our discussion from previous months, this new topic also makes this a great place for new members to join the group.

  • Feed the People: Community Conversations:
Our intention is to host a series of gatherings in which our discussions with the Wasat Community will point us towards creating actionable solutions providing a response to remedy an all too-real problem for too many people. Most weeks we hope to host a special guest, discussion facilitated by Stewardship and Sustainability Director Rhamis Kent.

  • Wasat Summer Nights:
This summer we will celebrate the blessing of being from his ummah and explore lessons to be learned from his example that apply to cultivating prophetic community in our times. Baraka Blue will take us through a reflection on stories from the seerah, followed by food, prayer in the park, and ample time for conversation and connection.

  • Neighborly Needs:
Distributing up to 1,500 meals a month to neighbors in need across South Seattle.

  • Youth Rites of Passage Program:
We are closing out the Rites of Passage program with a writing workshop facilitated by local hip-hop artist Essam Muhammed, final day-long in July, and a community celebration in August.
